On April 18, 2024, officers from the Canton Police Department responded to a single-vehicle crash on Sherrick Road SE. The incident occurred just after 8:15 p.m. in the 1700 block of the road, where officers found a power pole had been damaged in the accident. The suspect vehicle was discovered unoccupied nearby.
Witnesses directed officers to AMVETS at 1822 Sherrick Road SE, reporting that the driver had fled to that location. There, police encountered Frank E. Tyson, aged 53, from East Canton. A struggle ensued as officers attempted to detain him. Shortly after Tyson was handcuffed, he became unresponsive.
Emergency measures were taken by administering CPR and Narcan before medics from the Canton Fire Department arrived. Mr. Tyson was transported to Aultman Hospital and pronounced dead at 9:18 p.m.
The Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has been contacted for an independent review of the incident. Officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch, who were involved in the call and are part of the Traffic Bureau, have been placed on paid administrative leave according to department policy.
Canton Police Department Chief John Gabbard expressed his condolences: “I want to extend my deepest sympathy to those close to Mr. Tyson.” He further stated confidence in BCI's thorough investigation but noted limitations on further comments due to respect for its independence.
