City of Canton Mayor William V. Sherer II is reviving the tradition of lighting the city Christmas tree at Central Plaza South on Thursday, December 5, at 5:45 p.m. "It's been more than a decade since we did an official lighting of the city tree," said Mayor Sherer. "Bringing back this tradition is about more than just a tree, it's about the opportunity for families to create memories for generations to come and celebrating togetherness in our community."

The initiative to restore this tradition was supported by businesses and organizations within the Canton community. The tree was installed on November 26 with assistance from the City of Canton Street and Traffic Engineering Departments and Barnhart Crane & Rigging, which provided manpower, trucks, and equipment for transporting the tree to Central Plaza. The lights and decorations are set to be installed on Saturday, November 30, by International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers #540 using bucket trucks supplied by Hilscher-Clarke Electric Company.

Mayor Sherer will be accompanied by Vocal Fusion, an a cappella singing group, providing Christmas carols and entertainment during the event. Following the lighting ceremony, the annual Light Up Downtown festivities will commence at 6:00 p.m. in Centennial Plaza.
