City of Canton Mayor William V. Sherer II has addressed the public regarding an in-custody death that occurred on April 18, 2024. The incident involved Mr. Frank E. Tyson and has prompted a response from the mayor emphasizing transparency and protocol adherence.

In his statement, Mayor Sherer expressed condolences to Mr. Tyson's family and highlighted the city's commitment to transparency during the investigation process. "I first want to send my sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Frank E. Tyson," he stated.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) was contacted immediately after the incident, according to Mayor Sherer, and both officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave as per department policy. "We will make sure we comply with all protocols to ensure BCI has what is necessary to conduct what I know will be a thorough investigation," he added.

Mayor Sherer also assured that efforts are being made to release bodycam footage promptly while respecting the family's right to view it first. "My office has spoken with Mr. Tyson’s immediate family to give them the opportunity to view the footage before it is released to the public," he said.

Acknowledging the challenges such incidents pose for communities, Mayor Sherer pledged transparency from his office during difficult times and expressed confidence in Police Chief John Gabbard's leadership: "The City of Canton has my word that this office will be transparent with them when difficult times arise. I have full faith in the leadership of Chief John Gabbard as we navigate these waters."
