CANTON, Ohio - The City of Canton, Crossroads United Methodist Church, and Canton For All People (CFAP) have announced the opening of an overnight warming center to provide shelter for those in need. Located at Cross Roads United Methodist Church on 120 Cleveland Avenue SW, Canton, the center will offer cots, blankets, hot beverages, and food when the temperatures drop below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The center will operate in adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols, including the use of masks and social distancing measures.

"In times of extreme cold, it is crucial that we provide a safe and warm place for those who are vulnerable," said Tammy Diener, a representative from the City of Canton. "Crossroads United Methodist Church has generously offered their space to serve as an overnight shelter, and we are grateful for their partnership."

The warming center comes as temperatures are expected to drop again this weekend, and the City of Canton's safety forces will continue to check on citizens who are outside in the cold weather. Canton citizens in need of assistance are encouraged to call 911.

Transportation to the warming center will be provided by the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA). Those requiring transportation can access SARTA from any regular stop to the Cornerstone Transit Center on Cherry Avenue SE or utilize route #102 or #105 until 9:45 pm. Additionally, late loop #152 will be available from 9:45 pm to 12:45 am. There will be no fee for transportation to the warming center, and passengers are advised to inform the bus driver of their destination.

The City of Canton expressed gratitude for the collaboration between Crossroads United Methodist Church, CFAP, and SARTA in making this vital service available to the community.

"We are proud to partner with Crossroads United Methodist Church, CFAP, and SARTA in providing this much-needed service to our citizens," said a representative from the City of Canton.

Individuals interested in supporting the warming center by volunteering or donating food are encouraged to contact Crossroads United Methodist Church at 330-455-0153 between Tuesday and Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

As the temperatures continue to drop, the opening of the overnight warming center at Crossroads United Methodist Church offers a lifeline for those in need of shelter during the harsh winter months. The collaboration between the City of Canton, Crossroads United Methodist Church, CFAP, and SARTA demonstrates a commitment to community welfare and serves as a reminder of the importance of helping one another during challenging times.
