The City of Canton is excited to announce the return of the Subsidized Summer Youth Employment Program.
We are partnering with Simply Youth, a local non-profit, to connect local employers with summer employment needs with Canton’s youth who are looking for summer work.
Canton is acting as a clearinghouse in connecting local employers with summer employment needs with Canton high school students, ages 15 - 18. The City of Canton will reimburse employers 50% of the hourly wage, with a maximum reimbursement of $7.50 per hour for a maximum of 40 hours per week for up to 10 weeks. Simply Youth will identify city students for the program and will connect employers with students. The students must be a Canton City resident to be eligible. Students and their families will be responsible for providing transportation to and from the workplace. SARTA bus passes may be provided, where needed.
Simply Youth will provide a 2-day job readiness series to teach employment soft skills as a program requirement.
Mayor Bernabei says, “This is a great opportunity for employers to obtain subsidized summer help and at the same time have an opportunity to hire and train youth employees on a longer-term basis. It gives our youth exposure to the work place and the ability to earn money during their summer break. Last year’s pilot program placed and hired 64 youth with employers. We are hopeful to have more employers participate this year to provide the opportunity to place many more students this year.”
Employers interested in participating in the Subsidized Summer Youth Employment Program, please send an email to YouthEmployment@cantonohio.gov before April 14, 2023. In addition, please mark your calendar for Friday, May 19, 2023 at 8:30 am for the Employer Kick-off meeting.
We look forward to another successful Subsidized Summer Youth Employment Program!
