The Flashes Take Home Sun Bowl Title | Kent State University at Stark
The Kent State men's basketball team took home the WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Title 47-46 against the UTEP Miners. With a back-and-forth game that had eight ties and 17 lead changes, 5,705 fans were left on the edge of their seats until the very end.
This is Rob Senderoff's and the Flashes' first Sun Bowl Title since 1999 and increases their record to 5-2 overall in the tournament. Kevin Kalu gave the Miners a one-point lead (46-45) with 53 seconds remaining in regulation. After empty possessions from both sides, a foul on UTEP led to Tournament MVP Sincere Carry making two free throws with 18 seconds to go giving the Flashes the lead.
Sincere Carry poured in a game-high 15 points and chipped in a team-high six rebounds and three assists. Miryne Thomas' eight points helped him surpass 1,000 career points, and VonCameron Davis came off the bench recording six points and went 3 of 7 from the field.
The Flashes struggled to make shots, shooting 32.1 percent from the field and 16 percent from beyond the arch. The Flashes found other ways to get the job done taking advantage of the Miners' 19 turnovers and turning it into 19 points.
The Flashes (10-3) will rest up and prepare for MAC play inside the M.AC. Center Tuesday, Jan. 3 against Western Michigan.
