The Kent State field hockey team (7-8, 5-1 MAC) takes on Bellarmine for the final regular season home contest on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 30, the Golden Flashes travel to East Lansing to face off against Michigan State at 1 p.m.
About the Flashes
The Flashes have clinched a spot in the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament and will secure at least a share for the regular season title.
Last weekend, Kent State traveled to Virginia for two contests. Against Longwood on Friday, the Golden Flashes came out with a 3-2 victory after double overtime that resulted in a shootout. Cecile van Eijck shut down the Lancers and blocked the last shot to give the Flashes a win. Katie Wuerstle and Maria Cambra Soler each recorded a goal during the game. On Sunday, Kent State faced off against No. 7 Virginia and fell 3-0. Alex Sacker made a defensive save early in the third quarter, her third of the season. She is ranked No. 3 in the MAC for defensive saves. Cecile van Eijck made eight saves out of the 12 shots on goal during the game.
Scouting Bellarmine
Bellarmine (4-13, 2-4 MAC) went winless during its four-game home stand, concluding with a 5-1 lose to No. 18 Ohio State on Sunday. The Knights fell to Ohio 4-0 this past Friday. Before the match, Bellarmine and Ohio were tied for fifth place in the MAC standings. Bellarmine is now placed sixth.
Senior Amber Hofenk Jerembo leads the MAC in goals (12) and is second in points (25).
Scouting Michigan State
Michigan State (8-8) split pair of game against MAC teams last week. On Wednesday, the Spartans won 3-2 against Central Michigan. During the third quarter, the Chippewas tied the game 2-2 but Michigan State was able to score the game-winning goal five minutes into the final quarter. On Sunday, the Spartans faced off against Miami and fell 2-0.
The Spartans are ranked No. 6 in the country for defensive saves. Georgia Davies leads the way with four defensive saves. The offensive is led by Merel Hanssen, who has totaled 15 points on six goals and three assists.
The Series
The Golden Flashes are undefeated against Bellarmine 3-0. With all matchups being held in Kentucky, the Flashes have had three straight shutouts up against the Knights and scored five or more goals. Kent State has outscored Bellarmine 20-0 in the three previous contests. This will be the first time the Knights and Flashes face off in Kent, Ohio.
The Spartans lead the overall series against Kent State 8-25-2, including three straight wins. The Golden Flashes' last victory came for the 2016 home opener, 3-1, in Kent.
