The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the top track and field athletes and coaches for each of the regions in Division II on Monday (June 6) following the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Alexa Leppelmeier was named the Women's Midwest Region Track Athlete of the Year after her performances in the 3000 meter Steeplechase and the 5K run at nationals. She was the national runner-up and First Team All-American in the 3000 Steeplechase as she timed out at 10:12.93 in Allendale, Michigan. She ended up finishing as Second Team All-American in the 5K with a 11th place finish (16:47.08).
Within the G-MAC, Leppelmeier was victorious in the 1500 meters and the 3000 meter steeplechase. She was slotted third within the Midwest Region in the 1500 meters, fourth in the 5K and the top runner in the 3000 Steeplechase, in terms of performance.
Leppelmeier was the first Walsh runner since Sarah Berger and Marcus Myers won the Midwest honors in 2018.
