Walsh Sweeps Midweek Doubleheader at IUP

6

In a midweek non-conference doubleheader on the road, the Walsh Cavaliers baseball team picked up a pair of wins to push them to 9-8 overall. The Cavaliers won 3-2 in both ends of the twinbill on Wednesday (March 30) over the Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawks.

Walsh has won four straight games as they embark on their current PSAC competition swing.

Game One (W, 3-2)

  • In the bottom of the second inning, Walsh pieced together an inning to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Brady Maciak led off with a single and stole second later in the frame. Jacob Beachy doubled Maciak home with a RBI knock to left field.
  • The fourth inning saw a similar theme for the Cavaliers. Maciak opened the inning with a double to right field and he crossed the plate with a RBI double by Austin Marko. Jarret Lyon followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. A passed ball put two runners in scoring position while Davis Burick added a second run with a sacrifice fly to the left fielder. Walsh led 3-0 as the game swung to the fifth inning.
  • IUP strung four straight hits together to cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning. The Cavaliers used a perfect relay throw to cut the tying run down at the plate, keeping it 3-2 in favor of Walsh.
  • Walsh had seven hits in the game with six different players accounting for them. Maciak had two hits, including a double and scored two runs.
  • Cole Brogan powered through six innings with two runs allowed on seven hits. He did not walk a batter and fanned eight Hawks. Zach Thompson got a key double play in the seventh for his second save of the season.
Game Two (W, 3-2)

  • Just like game one, the second inning saw Walsh take the 1-0 lead. Lyon walked with two outs in the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch. After another wild pitch on a Beachy walk, Lyon scored on a RBI single by Burick.
  • Indiana tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field.
  • One inning later, Walsh took the 3-1 lead with a pair of runs. Andrew Morse walked and a passed ball moved him to second base. Ben Lefebvre walked to create a two on, one out jam. Following a pitching change, Joey Holiga walked to load the bases. Cam Kaiser scored Morse with a sacrifice fly to left field and Maciak followed with a single to right field.
  • A leadoff home run for the Hawks in the bottom of the seventh inning closed the gap to 3-2.
  • Lefebvre, Maciak and Burick tallied the lone three hits for Walsh. Walsh walked six times as a team.
  • Walsh's pitching staff held Indiana to two runs on four hits as six different pitchers worked in the game. Alex Beyerle tossed two scoreless innings to start the game with one walk and one strikeout. Nick Lallathin followed with one scoreless inning. Todd Bangtson got the win with 1.1 perfect innings. Alex Firsdon earned the save in the seventh inning.
Walsh will host Mansfield on Saturday (April 2) and Sunday (April 3) with a three-game series.
