The Walsh Cavaliers baseball team bounced back from a 1-3 weekend in Kentucky with a Friday sweep of their rivals, the Malone Pioneers in Great Midwest play.
Friday (March 25) saw the Cavaliers dispatch the Pioneers by 8-3 scores in both games at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium. Walsh is now 7-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
Game 1 (W, 8-3 in 9 innings)
- Walsh used seven unanswered runs in the game to start the day with a win. The Cavaliers opened the game with a run in the first inning on an RBI single by Cameron Kaiser, who doubled home Joey Holiga. Malone tied the game in the bottom of the first and took the 3-1 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run double. Walsh loaded the bases in the fifth inning on a single, hit by pitch and a fielder's choice before cashing in on two runs. Holiga singled home two runs for a tie game at three. Jacob Beachy doubled home one run in the sixth inning as the lead grew to 4-3. One inning later, Austin Marko coaxed a bases loaded walk before Jarret Lyon lifted a sacrifice fly to deep left field. Walsh led 6-3 at the seventh inning stretch. The Cavaliers ended the scoring in the ninth inning with the bases loaded again. After an error and two singles, Lyon had a RBI single and Beachy followed with a sacrifice fly for a 9-3 finish.
- Walsh had 12 hits in the game with six players tallying hits. Five of those players had multi-hit games with Holiga going three-for-three with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Brady Maciak, Lyon, Kaiser and Beachy all had two hits in the game while Lyon and Beachy manufactured two runs each.
- Drew Saunier battled through six innings as he limited the Pioneers to three runs (one earned) on four hits. He walked one and struck out eight batters. Alex Beyerle tossed three scoreless innings with two hits allowed and two punchouts for a save.
- For the second straight game, Walsh had to rally for the lead. Malone got a run off a leadoff double in the first inning. A five-run third inning with the help of seven hits fueled Walsh to a 5-1 lead. 11 batters stepped to the plate in the inning, including four straight RBI hits at one point. Maciak, Ben Lefebvre and Lyon had RBI singles while Austin Marko and Beachy notched RBI doubles in the frame. Malone pulled within 5-2 with a run in the fifth inning but Walsh added three more runs in the sixth inning. Lyon and Davis Burick gave RBI singles while Beachy had his second RBI double of the game. An error in the sixth inning closed the scoring for Malone. Walsh won 8-3 in the nightcap.
- Every player in the game for Walsh had a hit as the Cavaliers had 17 hits. Beachy went four-for-four with three doubles, two runs and a pair of RBIs. Lyon had three hits in the game along with two runs scored and batted in.
- Brant Alazaus went the distance with a seven-inning complete game. He scattered seven hits with three runs (two earned) allowed. He struck out three batters in his outing.
With Saturday's outing being postponed due to weather, the Cavaliers will return to the field on Tuesday (March 29) as they host Indiana (Pa.) at 1:00 PM.
